How to Hang Stall Drapes

Options For How to Hang Stall Drapes

Our new customers almost always ask us how to hang stall drapes before they place their order. Our answer to that question is that we make our products with a variety of options for easily doing so, and that it depends on the structure on which the drapes will be mounted (wood, steel, a combination).

Solo riders usually have to hang their own drapes, right? Not everyone has the luxury of sending out the roadies to do that. If you are in this category, rest assured that we offer a variety of methods to make it easy.

And, if you do have a staff to decorate your show barn, you (and they) will appreciate these options because it means the job will be done quickly and easily.

Following is the list of methods which are the options for how to hang stall drapes:

Reinforced Fabric Headers

This is the most common method.

If you choose to staple your drapes to lumber, such as the stall itself or additional 2 x 4s, reinforced fabric headers will work for years. Essentially, we triple the amount of fabric used in the top part of your stall drape during the sewing process. This makes a thick, sturdy edge which will accept heavy duty staples. Choose this method if you will be using metal brackets to hang the lumber, or if your drapes will be hung directly to a wooden stall.

Remember to remove used staples before folding the drapes for storage and travel so you don’t puncture the rest of the fabric unnecessarily.

Grommets

Grommets are small metal rings (usually less than an inch in diameter) pressed into the fabric, creating a circular opening to hammer a nail into without it cutting the cloth. We can add grommets along the top of each drape, valance, and horse name banner so that nails end up being evenly spaced. That way, the fabric will hang beautifully.

Grommets can also be utilized to hang banners and horse gear bags by connecting ropes, twine or zip ties to the stall.

D Rings

Named for its shape, these metal wonders can be sewn into equine bags and stall front banners to hang almost anywhere. Zip ties are perfect for quickly mounting products through “D” rings. They function like grommets (see above), with the added advantage of being somewhat more flexible for mounting a bag to an inner railing.

Other Options for How to Hang Stall Drapes – Frames & Brackets

Although our company doesn’t sell the structural part (wood, frames, or metal brackets) to hang your new barn drapes, there are many companies who do. We like Easy UpĀ® Stall Drape Hangers (metal brackets designed for hanging stall curtains) and Curtain HelperĀ® (a specialized wooden structure that you take with you from show to show).

Please Note: Sea Horse Stall Drapes is not associated with and does not receive any fees or commissions from either of these companies. We just like their products.

Some exhibitors build their own custom wooden frames at each horse show. These are usually outdoors, extend up high (example 15′ high), and are similar to a large, open picture frame made of 2 x 4s. The frames are usually fastened to the show barn exterior wall by rope or wire, and typically require ladders and at least two people working together to mount the drapes or banners. If this is your chosen method, we can reinforce the hems on all four sides of the drape or banner since they are stapled onto the wood.
